It’s snowing up here. Went out tonight, snow on the ground, possibly on top of ice, went round a roundabout quite slowly and the backend drifted out

is this what you’d expect? I know the Quattro system isn’t infallible but I thought it would be better?

would the suspension settings make a difference ?

It's a big, heavy car and if there is ice the quattro makes very little difference. Winter tyres will make a bigger difference. Also depends what you do when it starts to go, if you hit the brakes it doesn't help much but some acceleration can but please be careful doing this as it can also launch you off the road - probably best to try it in an open space first to see what it feels like.

If the back end came out you were going too fast.

I was in Austria over new year and in heavy snow, the locals were driving around as if it was perfect conditions. I can only imagine this must be down to winter tyres as virtually no one had chains.

Wow!!!! That is unbelievable. I stupidly thought there was very little difference between the two types of tyres. I am genuinely shocked.

I was also sceptical until I saw similar videos. I've been a convert to winter tyres for the past 5 years or so. Makes a huge difference at low temperatures or in snow/icy conditions. You still have to be sensible but the level of grip gives great confidence. When I bought my current Q7 I got the dealer to throw in set of winter tyres on 20 inch alloys. Switched them in November and will probably switch back to to summers in April

Winter tyres will help - a lot!

Summer tyres are made from a harder compound - and like leather soled shoes - slip easily. Winter tyres have a softer compound enabling them to work better at lower temperatures.

However, you slide on ice as easily as a car without.

I believe the rubber on winter tyres remains soft below approximately 8deg. while normal tyres start hardening up and impacts on grip.
Regarding driving on ice I agree that if you are driving too quickly you will lose it. At reasonable speed however I believe overall drivability, stability, cornering and stopping distance are all improved with winter tyres.

Totally agree regarding winter tyres, the stopping distance tests alone prove how much safer your car becomes. I have a friend who thinks 4 wheel drive will improve his stopping distance tried telling him the drive bit but hey his wife slid straight across a junction in his pride and joy!!!!!!!! Now the hard sell with a winter wheel set up your summer rubber will last twice as long and wheels won't get scuffed when you slide into the kerb lol.
Anyway I am selling a genuine set of Audi q7 wheels and winter tyres provided by Audi. On ebay at the minute. If anyone is interested pm me before late afternoon today.
