My son's old USA VW Passat 2.8 tiptronic, the same powertrain as my old 1998 A6 2.8 tiptronic, clunks and jerks horribly on anything but gentle take-off, especially hill starts. It feels as though a drive shaft is skipping a spline. Does anyone know if this is a well known fault, or could it be a problem with the usually bomb-proof ZF 5HP box?

ZF 5HP´s are not bombproof. They usually break on BMWs and lose reverse gear. On Audis, they stated that the oil is for life, bit this causes issues when the oil ages out. Unfortunatelly, sometimes putting fresh oil makes it worse.
