Hi folks, as you may have read my wipers went a few weeks ago and the car hasn't been in use while I avoid paying Audi circa £275 plus vat for a new linkage mechanism! It would appear that it is a common fault and there are now little (or no) non oem / Audi (valeo etc) mechanisms remaining in Rhd - beware if you order them check they probably for Lhd cars!

There are 2 types of repair kits on eBay one is a clip the other a fork with a bolt both to me seem a bit crap and really a temporary repair!

By chance I came across a company called White Engineering in Ireland, they specialise in wiper linkage and bush repairs.

I ordered a pack which gets you 2 new bushes and 2 bush retaining c clips for under £15 delivered.

So tonight in -5 I was determined to get this sorted! I think it's pretty obvious what's going on so apologies for the limited description but the pictures do the talking!

I had to use a bearing puller to get the wiper arms off along with penetrating spray so watch out for that!

Mark the wiper blade positions for refitting.

The scuttle panel closest to the windscreen is a pig to remove there must be a nack and refitting is as bad.

The electrical box cover needs to be removed before the wiper motor and linkage mechanism can come out, is see the Indy that replaced this mechanism last time managed to lose a fair few screws down in the bulkhead watch out for that!

With the mechanism out I removed the worn linkage arm. As I was in a hurry and I couldn't feel my fingers I decided to burn the old black bushing out it - it melted pretty quickly!

The new white bushing is a good fit and held by a c-clip I couldn't find the right pliers which made fitting the clip a bit of a pain but got there - watch your eyes!

I decided not to do the other bushing as it was a good tight fit and there was little visible wear on the ball head.

I cleaned up the ball head that went into the worn bushing. The head was a bit rough which I cleaned up prior to greasing and refitting!

Access at this point is very good with the covers off to clean the 2 upper bulkhead drainage grommets and the centre wiper drain (seen in the last pic) all 3 on mine were clogged and I have had a bit of damp in the cabin so hopefully that will fix this! For a while this cleaning was an Audi service advisory according to a few articles.

Refitting is as they say the reverse of removal, just watch you are getting a good fit of the cover for the electronics next to the wiper motor.

Hopefully this is of use to someone, more so the fact that you can replace a bushing in a linkage arm and avoid spending £300 in the first week of January!

Great I found it, and thank you for your swift response.

They only have one size ... can I assume it will fit the A6 as well as other Audi models i presume it is a standard size) ?

    Regards

    Dave

I’m not sure I called them I think, have you got an A6 if it’s a 2004 to 2008 then should be fine - worth checking though

This is a really useful post and saved me a pile of cash too - thanks.

    A couple of further tips:

    1. A wiper arm puller works to get the arms off the splines - be patient with lots of penetrating oil, tightening up tool and a few sharp taps when all is tensioned up.

    2. It is possible to gain access to the bushes without removing the scuttle panel - there's just enough clearance to undo the three bolts attaching the motor / linkage assembly. I slid the arm with the damaged bush past the electrics after removing the electrical cover to gain access.

    3. A plumber's pipe wrench is useful to reattach the ball joints into the bushes.

    4. Make sure that wipers are both mounted in the correct positions and tightened up before trying the wipers - otherwise you may end up having to take it all apart again (learned the hard way).

Remember to close the bonnet when testing them.

They won’t work with the bonnet up and you get no codes.

    Glad to see this helped!

Yes on completion but before fitting the wipers & arms it’s worth closing the bonnet and testing that way you know the wipers are definitely at rest when you re-attach them.

Very helpful posts thank you. Owen did you manage to remove the motor and arm assembly without removing the scuttle panel? Of just the arm with the failed bush.

Sorry for the extremely late reply! That time, just the arm with the failed bush. I’ve just had another issue with a different car though, where the static, stabilising arm on the mechanism had split completely so I had to take out the whole mechanism. After much messing about with the scuttle panel I found that it does come out by applying a steady, strong upwards force at one end and then, when one side is free, it’s relatively simply to tease the rest out.

After welding up the stabilising arm and testing, I completely forgot the previous advice about shutting the bonnet and, assuming my welding had fried the motor, paid a trip to the local scrappy to source a replacement. Realised my mistake when the new motor didn’t work and fitted the repaired mechanism pretty quickly - at least I now have a spare! The scuttle goes back in easily when all the muck is blown out with an air line.
