    Hi,

    I have a 2010 Golf 1.5 diesel, been in the family for 7 years now. There is something weird going on with the car. When the ignition is switched on and the car is started even when the car is not started a number of things seem to happen:

    1. Temp sensor needle intermittently drops to zero then jumps up to approx 45 degrees;
    2. In conjunction with the temp sensor needle the rev counter needle does the same drops to zero then back up to idling at 10;
    3. Battery light and power steering light take it in turn to alternate between one going on and the other going off, then on then off,
    4. The doors lock and unlock repeatedly.

    I am hoping one of you guys has seen this behaviour before? If so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    cheers

    Sd

    Could it be the battery is on its way out? Not had those problems myself just making a suggestion as I know cars can misbehave when the battery is going. At 7 years old and in the colder months is a possibility

    Yes that could well be a weak battery, the astonishing thing is, due to the permanent magnet starters, they will crank the engine over and even let it run but ancillaries will go nuts if the engine is not running. An S8 we had in over Christmas was so flat this morning that we could not get the key back out of the ignition after trying to start it, the alarm was going nuts as was the dash and the boot would not open (which is where the battery is!!!!) but the bloody thing was trying to turn over, all ten cylinders of it!

    I had similar haywire dash warnings one christmas day a few years back, car would start fine and faults would clear after about 10 mins running, but reappear at the next cold start. Battery was struggling to hold charge overnight, new one sorted it out.
