So yesterday my 59 plate broke down on the motorway, got towed finally to my destination. AA sent out 2 mechanics during this relay, both plugged in and told me it was a problem with the egr valve. I'm going to get to a garage first thing tomorrow, I'm wondering how much this should cost to fix? As I've googled for similar stories and prices range from £158 to over £1000, wondering why there's such a difference in price!

edit - this is the 1.6 tdi bluemotion model

The CAYC 1.6 CR TDI is notorious for EGR valve failure, we have done dozens of them. We tried using aftermarket and they were hopeless, failing instantly in one case and being as installation takes a good five hours, that is no joke. The problem is the valve is often on back order from VW and I don't know if they will have any UK stock. The current price is around £330 but on top of that is a sizeable labour bill so typically it is a £700 job. Has your car had the emissions recal carried out?

Thanks for the reply. No i didn't take it in for recall as i read about all the problems people had after. I've done over 100k so seems bit lucky as it appears this goes sooner. I did find the part for 180 on 1 website not sure how quick turn around is though

Only buy it genuine, the warranty is two years and includes parts and labour backed by the VW service network, no matter who fits it. I have tried all the brands of aftermarket unit on the 1.6 and 2 litre and they caused me hell and embarrassment in front of my customers so now I will only fit genuine.
