    Hi Folks,

My current car is my first automatic and first DSG. In the same time. I just wonder if you engage N in the heavy traffic or long traffic lights. There is so much on the internet about it without clear answer really. The common sense says to engage N when you expect to be stationary for longer than few seconds. I guess using start/stop is the option as well. Just wonder what you guys do?

    Nops. And I don't use start-stop - hate that crap. I always use brake-hold.

Going between D and N at every stop, traffic light etc will wear out the gearbox. Simply hold on brake or use the autobrake if your car has it.

Interesting, I actually thought it would provide some relief as clutch would be disengaged.

The only time I take the car out of gear is if I am likely to be stationary for a while and I will have plenty of time to get going again and the engine has switched off due to start-stop - in which case I shift to P (which automatically engages parking brake and I can take foot off the brake without the engine kicking back in again).
The rest of the time I keep foot on the brake or use auto-hold and always leave the ‘box in gear.
I have never shifted to N while waiting. Come to think of it I don’t think I have ever put the car in N intentionally.

Honestly, I think I never used "N", IMHO it's for towing only.

    I'm similar....first Auto with DSG.
When the auto handbrake is applied the car has the intelligence to stop creeping....so there's no pressure on the clutch or handbrake. It's like sitting in neutral but with the instant drive when you hit the gas.

Certainly do not hold on the brake and dazzle cars behind with brake lights. Don't know why I bother as no one else does

I too used to never hold the car on the brake partly for this reason, however the A6 start-stop relies on you holding the car on the brake - i.e. the engine cuts in again as soon as you release the brake pedal, and I'm not going to shift into P every time I stop. If start stop doesn't activate I release the brake pedal and the car is held on hill-hold and the brake lights switch off. On our TTS the brake lights stay on with hill-hold even after the brake pedal is released (regardless of whether start-stop is activated), i.e. the car will always display the brake lights when stationary until the accelerator pedal is pressed.

The advantage of the TTS system over the A6 is that once stopped and the engine has switched off due too the start-stop system, you don't have to sit there with your foot on the brake. Maybe the newer A6s are like this too? Mine is a pre-facelift ultra.

Kind similar, it's that era of cars.

They forgot that the whole purpose of the auto brake-hold was to take the foot 'off' the pedal

Anyways not an issue for me as I'm not a fan of the engine start-stop.

Brake just enough to stop, brake-hold activates, foot off the pedal before engine stops. - this part is as designed - user manual talka about it.
