Hi, I have a Mk4 Golf (which in the USA was last sold as my 2005 model). There is a problem unlocking the rear boot (trunk, hatch).

When I use the interior boot (trunk) release lever, I hear a clicking from the back, as though the rear hatch door (boot, trunk) were being unlocked. But I find that lifting the handle doesn't open the hatch. I need to use the key, turn the lock, and then use the handle to open the hatch.

When I use the key fob to unlock that door, the horn honks encouragingly, but I hear no clicking, and I also need to use the key to unlock the hatch. (The key fob does work remotely to unlock/lock the passenger doors.)

Note: all other electrical functions to the rear hatch seem to work OK (lights, wiper, etc.)

Note: there is no "valet button" in the glove box that might control whether the key fob works for the rear hatch. Is there such a button elsewhere? (I no longer have the manual.)

Not a crucial item, but it would be a convenience to have working again.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like corrosion has jammed the electric lock/unlock mechanism. If you remove the boot lid inside cover moulding (I assume it's a hatchback), you'll have access to the "works". I suggest you spray WD40 or other easing/penetrating oil on any obviously jammed/corroded parts and wiggle them until they're free. Check with the key fob if it works. If you get it working, I'd recommend silicone grease, possibly from a spray can, to keep things mobile and repel water.

The other possibility is a broken linkage; it should be obvious with the cover off. Breaker's yard is probably best source for parts, or VW agent if you must.

Don't know if Mk4 manuals are available online but in the UK the owner's section of the main VW web page has access to online manuals by entering the vehicle registration number or VIN number.

Hope you can sort it out.
