    Good evening all

Had my A6 272 saloon (bought new in March 2016) serviced at the end of October. They (Stockport Audi) advised that new front brake pads would be needed soon (they said that they were 70% worn) and asked if they should do them. I told them to leave it for now partly because they did admit when questioned that they still have a few months left and also that they wanted to charge me about £350 for the work

The car had only done about 19,000 miles at that time. I had forgotten about it until today when an orange brake pad warning light came on (pic attached). However it did go off when I started the car later on tonight to go home. The car has now done 20,000 miles.

    My questions are as follows:

Surely the front pads should have lasted longer. My previous A6 (a 2013 177) didn’t have any brake work done in the 3 years and 34,000 miles that I had it although I do drive this car harder)

Realistically how long have I got from when the orange warning light comes on until I should definitely get the work done.

Is £350 a lot for the work and how much have other A6 drivers paid for this at main dealers.

Is it ok do get it done at an independent, how much should I expect to pay there and will it void my warranty or contract hire agreement with VWFS.

Does anyone know a reputable Audi independent in Stockport, Manchester or Cheshire.

    Many thanks in advance

There seems to be a few post recently about brakes pads/discs replacements at lowish miles.
Have a look for Brembo or trw replacements pads. I got mine for around £30 and gonna fit them myself. The 272 has Brembo callipers up front and a doddle to fit. Otherwise it’s an hour or so labour at your local garage. Still cheaper than Audi prices by a long shot.

I just had tyres on my 21k miles Avant BE 214 and ATS showed me my front pads were very low. I’m shocked Audi didn’t spot anything when it was serviced on 3rd October. I’m waiting for a warning light and will then book it in

I'm in the lucky position that my car is via my employer's company car scheme and is on a full maintenance contract. Therefore it will be a call to Arval to make it their problem.

My experience with Arval is that they used a main dealer for the service and put Michelin tyres on by preference so I don't think they will penny pinch here either.

21k miles on the 2015 biTDi to be told i need new pads and discs due to worn pads and "excessive corrosion" on inner disc :-0 Quick look under car and pads are at 50% with a tiny but of rust on inner disc, needless to say- it can wait rather than the mega money to change!

2014 A6 Allroad 245PS, owned for 2 years and bought with 15k miles. Just replaced front pads at 37k with Ferodo pads from the local motor factors at ~£60inc vat. I've tow a race car to a from tracks in the UK as well as to Germany so I've been happy to get this mileage out of the front pads on a heavy car that's been fully loaded almost towing its own weight.

Have now had the pads replaced at an independent. £225 including replacing the sensor wire. They used Audi official Brembo pads

I’ve got to get my fears done. It went in to Audi at the end of November and they said the rear pads are 90% worn in 9,000 miles. Fronts are fine. Which seems odd. Quoted £383 to replace the rear pads. I laughed at them and took my car, after they assured me the rear brakes are fine and nothing is binding or causing them to wear that fast.

I’m going to go to an independent garage. I’ll get either TRW or Brembo pads for the back which are about £50 delivered for a full set. Then it’s just the labour to change them.
