I am suffering a problem with my A3 8P TFSI. Occasionally when accelerating hard under load it will stop at 4k rpm and loose all power but typically return to normal after a few moments.

I have scanned with my VCDS and get 000135 Fuel Rail/System Pressure p0087-002-Too low-Intermittent. I have logged measured blocks and although I have not managed to replicate the fault with VCDS connected I have noticed that when accelerating the actual rail pressure drops by up to 50% of the specified pressure, often being 50bar less. Is this an indication of the problem? I am not sure whether it is relevant but the fuel pressure regulator value under MBV seems to occasionally sit at a particular value such as -802 or -1114 and when this happens the rail pressure difference is exactly zero. Any thoughts please would be welcome.

What is the engine code and year? If you take the oil cap off, can you smell raw fuel in the oil?

Hi Crasher, thanks for your reply. It's a 2006 BWA. I will check the oil cap and come back to you.

Edit: No smell of petrol after a short journey. Will check again after a more enthusiastic drive.

I attach an excerpt from my VCDS log which shows the rail pressure difference of up to 66 bar when accelerating hard. I'm sure this is the issue, but not sure yet what is causing it. Perhaps cam follower, perhaps pressure sensor is faulty or maybe even the hpfp.fuel press log.jpg

I may be a step closer to solving this one. I removed the high pressure fuel pump and found the cam follower was worn right through and the end of the fuel pump piston was worn to an angle. Looks like 70,000 miles has taken its toll.
