Hi just about to buy a 2012 Golf 1.6 tdi match bluemotion, with 62,000 on the clock. I am hearing of some having problems with the dpf fitted to these cars. Can you tell me how much of a problem this is, does everyone suffer with problems ? What can be done to lesson the problem. Welcome any thoughts.

    Regards
    J.W.

No issue with dpf (I might be corrected by someone who is more knowledgeable than me).
    STOP/START
EGR are the two main causes.

I owned a 1.6 Tdi bluemotion about 4 years ago and it had around 33k miles on when I sold it if I remember correctly. I owned it for around 12 months and it was a constant pain. As the car was mostly used for town driving for distances of between 3 to 4 miles at a time the regeneration process was not able to work through the cycle and I had to keep forcing a regeneration while parked up on my driveway using vagcom or take the car on a 30mile motorway run with the computer plugged in and various measuring blocks open to physically watch the dpf unblock itself.
I friend also had trouble with his but not to the extent that I did. I also had an EGR issue that required replacement, something I would not expect of a car with around 30k on the clock at the time. I sold the car in the end because of the hassle and bought a 2.0 Tdi A3 and had no issues at all and now after a few more vehicle changes am back with a Golf 2.0 Tdi and have (touch wood) had no EGR or DPF issues

EGR issue is widely reported and discussed. Haven't come across concerns being raised about the DPF.

Having said that .. if you are intending on owning the car for a good few years, I would suggest considering using good quality fuel. Alternatively, with supermarket diesel use an additive that helps the diesel combust better. With the better ones the regen cycle will kick in between longer intervals. I suppose that is a good indicator that the DPF is having to deal with lesser amount of soot .. and hence lesser ash in the long run.
