    Hi
I have been a previous owner of 2008 A6. Had to see it go very reluctantly when it developed problems with flywheel. I am now looking to buy another A6 saloon preferably the TDi Ultra model mainly for its fuel economy. What is the general consensus for mpg with this model for someone who does 60% city roads and 40% motorway? I am looking at 2014 models, could someone point me to the general issues that I should be aware of before I commit to buy a second hand car.
    Thanks
    Raj

I have a 2017 Ultra auto. Pretty much 70% urban, 30% motorway miles and it averages about 42mpg

That is far from impressive of their claimed combined mileage of 60mpg. I know it is under test conditions but I would have expected it to be at least 50mpg. Someone on fuelly had reported avg of 56mpg. Has anyone been able to achieve that?

I'm averaging 42mpg at the moment but I only have 3k miles on the clock so I am hoping it will improve as the engine loosens up. My last one (not an Ultra but still a 2.0 TDi) averaged 52mpg (according to the DIS) over 80k miles.
Now: 2016 C7 2.0TDi BE with Tech Pack, magic parking, ambient lighting
    Previous: 2013 C7 2.0 TDi S Line
    C6 2.0 TDI LE
    A4 2.0 TDI SE
and an ancient 80 in the olden days...

I've just passed 36k in my TDi Ultra S Tronic which I've had from new since Sep 2015. I have averaged 56mpg over the 36k (never reset the long term display since day 1) and would say I do 70% motorway miles and rest on A roads.

I have had my ultra for 6 months now. It is MY2015 has done 10k mls since I bought it and average 47mpg with 60% motorway and 40% town. I was at 50mpg when I was doing 90% motorway.

I managed to achieve 60mpg on a 30mls distance driving at speed of 40-45mls behind the tractor.

I would say that mpg is about 80% right comparing to the official figures. Have a look at the honestjohn.co.uk real mpg. They have really good info of actual mpg results.

I should add that, mine is black edition with 20” 255/35/20 wheels. That definitely does not help mpg

I guess then the 50mpg holy grail is highly achievable. I have been driving a Prius and was able to achieve 59mpg over 35k miles. I wonder whether skills like feather touch and pulse acceleration would help in achieving good mileage on city roads with the A6 ultra

I'm going to stir it up a bit here but if you are buying the car off your own ££ rather than a company paying for it then the fuel consumption is irrelevant unless you do HUGE miles.

People focus on the MPG but ignore the fact that they buy a vehicle for (e.g.) £13k and it depreciates £1k or £2k in the following year.
Wake up people.. if cost is your main driver then start looking at the overall cost envelope.... purchase, fuel, tyres, servicing (and likely depreciation)

I'm saddened by the number of people I see on here who are hell bent on a low MPG goal ... it really is not the game changer.

You are right of course......mpg is only one factor of overall running costs. Whilst I have a 56mpg average I don't aim for this, I just drive how I want to/am able to depending on traffic and the resulting mpg is what it is. I spend a lot of time on the M60 which can be a nightmare and the biggest factor in mpg on the motorway is, in reality, the overall traffic conditions not how we choose to drive as individuals. So on an early morning run to work in light traffic I get well over 56mpg and on the return journey in heavy traffic I get well under 56 mpg. Same journey but I don't choose how economically I drive.....everyone else on the road does!
