    2006 Caddy, 1.9 PD, DSG, Air-con

Took it to get Aircon serviced today (fed up with waiting on fogged windscreen to clear on these damp mornings). Well respected and competent, local specialist; so no issues there!

He told me that the fans were running all the time, which was preventing the aircon from working, as it percieves a fault condition.

I hadn't noticed this before, but with the engine noise and my tunes, I'm not really surprised. However, it always takes about 10 miles to reach full temperature on a cold morning's commute; but this has been a constant in the two years I have owned it.

in addition, no relevent fault codes stored; just the EGR dtc which comes and goes.

Got it home and let it cool down for an hour. Indeed, when the ignition is turned on, nothing happens for about 10 seconds; then both fans start turning together, slowly. The both gather in speed, over the next 15 or-so seconds, until they are running flat-out.

I'm going to pull the airbox tomorrow, and have a look at all the wiring I can get to; but I don't yet know where all the relevent sensors, connectors and components are located; so was hoping someone can bring me up to speed, or at least point me to some resources with could help?

A wiring diagram would be fantastic, as would a harness diagram, with the connectors identified.

Also, interested to hear from anyone who has troubleshot this problem before, and wether there are any common culprits which cause this fault!

    Many thanks, in advance!

    UPDATE

Took a look at this yesterday, and discovered that the alternator harness has been touching the constantly running fan; almost severing the wires. Removed this harness to repair the damage, then refitted; making sure it is routed and clipped properly.

This hasn't solved the fan problem, but I am glad I found this before it created another problem!

I would like to be able to power the fans down, but none of the fuses in the Owner's Handbook are designated to them. Any ideas how I can disconnect them, without leaving plugs open to the elements?

If i remember correctly if the intake flap motor fails it blows the fuse and brings the fans on. The fuse will be in the engine bay E box high by the air filter.

Also on the fans you will have four wires on the plug. Two thick wires one is the red wire is the fan live and the other thick wire is brown this is the earth wire next you have two thin wires one usually yellow is ac fan on activation live. The other is red and white and this is engine ecu activation ie activated by temperature or by engine ecu. So if one of these thin wires are permanently live thats your clue why its running all the time. Also bear in mind the main fan is also a controller for the small fan. So it could be an internal fault in the main fan (larger fan).

    Thanks for the advice!

The sun has come out now, so I think I will go and have a roll-around to see what's happening at the main fan plug!

I read that the fans will also run if they lose the ECU signal too?

Yep. Coolant fans constantly running can be a faulty engine ecu itself. But do all the other checks 1st.

Actually thinking about it now as im recovering from last nights beer . This vehicle has boardnetz so if the fuse blows for the intake flap motor (which is the same fuse for the fans)then the ecu brings the fan on constantly as a fail safe. Wonderful thing boardnetz it screws up your thinking. Boardnetz brings the headlights on if the headlight switch fails and if the ignition switch fails it , it still starts.

I found this handy fuse and power feed identification, for the Caddy:

    http://knigaproavto.ru/shemy/en/volk...x-diagram.html

Seems that F24 does Flap, Fans & Injectors, so I guess I would have bigger problems if this had blown!

At least I know I can power them down, by disconnecting the power feed at the engine fuse box.

Checked F24 (and all the engine bay fuses) but not blown.

Pesky fans turned off, for now, by disconnecting cable from distribution rail. Note that I was able to safely stow the cable in one of the spare clamps, on the right-hand side.
