Could be literally anything. You haven't identified which A4 model it is exactly, engine, etc.

When was the timing belt last done? 4-cylinder models are 60k miles or 5 years, and 6-cylinder V6 models are 80k miles or 5 years. When the front of the car is in the service position - a proper assessment can be made of the pulley bearings. If not done, then get it done and look to get water pump renewed at same time (including genuine thermostat if V6 2.5 TDI) and tensioner pulley.
    2016 BMW i3 REx (25k)
    2012 A4 Allroad Quattro 2.0 TDI (55k)
    2003 A2 1.4 TDI SE (166k) sold
    2001 B5 A4 2.5 TDI Avant Quattro Sport, (173k), sold
    1995 B4 80 1.9 TDI Avant SE, (175k), sold

Could be the alternator one way pulley clutch. It made a wailing sound on my 1.9tdi until I replaced it.
