It happened on the motorway for me. I reset the code with vcds and only cruised around town after. It didn’t come up again. I replaced it within a week of first occurrence. Big job tho, vw has egr located behind the engine. I actually traded the car two weeks after for current A6. Should have left it as it was....

1st post so pls be gentle with me. In my case seems to go into limp mode when auto box down shifts either up hill towing caravan or flooring it without. Any help would be useful I am even prepared to buy diagnostics but do not know what would be best for A6 all road 2009 3.0 tdi

welcome to forum. You'd be best getting a scan and code then starting a new thread of your own. even a basic OBD II scanner should pick up a logged limp mode code. Yours sounds like a boost related issue if it kicks in when the turbo spools up during acceleration or load increases.

Welcome to the forum. FYI this part of the forum is for the C7 version of the A6 (2011-2018), your car is a C6 (2005-2010)so you may want to ask for this post to moved to that forum as they will have more experience of your vehicle. Hope it gets sorted
