    Hi

I started my golf today and the coolant level light came on, when i checked it, it was low however i know it was topped up to the max level only three days prior. The car then began smoking for about five miles after i topped the coolant up, it has now stopped smoking but is still using water, any advice????

    Thanks

if no external leaks, most probably the head gasket is on its way out

if it has a water cooled EGR bypas it as I have seen A lot of these fail repetedly, as in loads of them, just take it out and run a hose from outlet to return, I bet that head gasket is not on its way out. if thogh egr is not water cooled-it might be head gasket !!!

Have you checked the dipstick for signs of water in oil? There will be a sweet smell to it if antifreeze is working it’s way into the engine oil.

I’ve just had a similar problem on mine which turned out to be the water pump and leaks here are hard to spot

I agree as I'v said above, I'v lost count of how many water cooled EGR's even new, within weeks of fitting, start to leak again causing coolant loss-- mostly on a4 b7's though, but yeah they are a week spot across the board-I/we just take them off and blank egr then run pipes from /to--feed to return--problem solved !!!
