1.9tdi overcharging?

Hi guys

I have noticed recently my battery light coming on intermittently when driving, can be any speed it will flash then go off every now and again. I went to my mechanic who checked it the battery which was showing around 16-17v with lights on and engine running when it should be 13-14.5? I had the alternator changed about 2 years ago so not sure if that is faulty now as he said only comes with 1 year warranty....typical!
I read somewhere else it could be regulator?

any ideas?

stop driving the car get the alternator fixed or you will be needing new battery by overcharging the battery cells will burn out and you could end up having fire.regulator is fitted in side the alternator. if you are not capable of fixing it your self get your mechanic to sort it out

How accurate is the mechanics volt meter ? - worth getting another check. Alternator output should be greater than 14V ( but less than 15V) with all lights , heated rear screen ,A/C on, etc with engine at 2K rpm. Voltage regulator is the likely culprit. New regulator is only about £30.

very accurate, 14.25 volts should read.

I agree.

You don't usually need a voltmeter to check for over charging. The smell and the hissing sound of the escaping gas usually tells you about it before you even put a meter anywhere near the battery.
