I would try removing them both give them a clean and then touch the pos and neg ends together for 30 seconds then reconnect to the battery also clean where the earth cable connects to the body of the car

the touching of the wires is a bmw trick to put the ecu into sleep mode but it could work on a vw its worth a try nothing to lose

I would try factory reset of ECU---disconect the batt, leave for twenty mins, reconect bat, key in turn to first position(do not try to start) leave in that pos for 5mins-then withought turning key off first-go for start--leave ticking over for 5mins dont start reving it iether, and leave everything switched off, lights, raidio, heater etc etc. !!!

Have you tried a different battery? If that does not work I have heard of a dash cluster electrical fault that could cause such behaviour but the fix is to replace the dash binnacle or have it tested and repaired.

    Hopefully it is not mice!
