Thanks for the response. When I changed the timing belt I started the car whilst the serp belt was off and the same noise was there thus ruling out any of the pumps and pulleys at the front.

I had a fear ii was something to do with the tensioner but it seems from your posts that you don’t think it’s that. I plan to do a vcg and cct gasket replace early next year. So I will investigate then anyway. It has a leak that causes burnt oil fumes to enter the cabin.

Thanks so much for your help!

In view of the work involved in accessing possible sources of the noise, I think you should definitely try to locate it accurately before you start pulling things apart.

A good start would be to get a stethoscope, such as Sealey VS871 Technician's Stethoscope: Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools , although a length of plastic hose can be used to do the same thing.

I am also wondering if one of the chain drives under the valve covers could be fouling something. I once had an intermittent noise from valve gear which I eventually found was due to the oil baffle under the valve cover having been bent by someone working on the engine, so that it touched a tappet.

Another possibility is the automatic transmission, I'm not sure what exactly i there could make such a noise, but it should be possible to eliminate that possibility with a stethoscope on the gearbox.

Thanks. It’s never had an atf change I don’t think, so that’s on the list too.

Thanks for your advice about stethoscope. Good idea.

So hats off to FrenchAudi who guessed right! I changed the atf yesterday and no more noise!

Looking at the state of the magnets and the oil I guess it had never been changed.

Reading other posts it seems I need to do another change in a few days to get rid of all the old oil right?

    Thanks all!
