    Hi,
I’m due to collect a used Audi A6 from Audi Derby on Friday and want to transfer the plate from my trade in to my new car:

The dealer tells me it will take a couple of weeks and I need to put my plate on retention until I get my new v5 in my name from the DVLA.

Looking on line it seems as though the dealer could do the transfer of ownership online on the DVLA website and then as long as I tax it online there and then the reg transfer could also be done immediately on line and I could collect the car with my reg plate on. Is this the case?

    Thanks in advance,

    Neil

Not sure on transfer, but I put a new private plate on my car last year and did it online, took about 5 mins to complete the form online and authorisation was given there and then...

I know in the past with my other car I take the plate off a couple of months before then hand the certificate to the dealer to register the new car with that plate on... that was done 3 years ago so it could be the same for that now, all done online..

Pretty sure the dealer could do it using form V317 or you might need to do it as the owner. Still costs £80 though!!

As Stuart says, the online way is very quick and you get an email confirmation with a form to produce until your new V5 appears.

Do it online, and it is virtually instantaneous, a lot better than when it used to be by post
