I've got a 2002 B6 Avant, 1.9TDI 130BHP with 230,000 on the clock. It runs beautifully and I love it, but I've noticed sometimes when I accelerate through 2nd and 3rd it shoves out a fair bit of smoke for a few seconds. Weirdly, I've only ever noticed the smoke at night in the headlamps of following cars, so I don't actually know what colour it is. That's not to say it doesn't happen in the day but I can't see it.

Is this just standard diesel behaviour or should I be concerned?

    Cheers!

Without seeing the smoke it would be foolhardy to make a statement of fact, but I would expect a 130 with those miles to puff a little on hard throttle, would not bother me unless it became noticeably worse or heavier.

Thanks fourringsrus. The more I've kept an eye on it recently and also watched other cars of a similar age and engine (other A4s, A6s, Octavias etc of that age) the more I think it probably is just age related, so your comment is quite reassuring! Anything in particular I should be doing to keep the engine in good nick other than using decent fuel and regular servicing?

Yes, regular servicing using the best materials you can afford.
As I said before, I wouldnt make a statement of fact without seeing the smoke, but it is common for a diesel to smoke on hard revs, even when new.
So decent air filter, decent or best recommended fuel filter for best performance, just think a poor or clogged/dirty air filter is suffocating the engines ability to breathe clean air,we dont like that so why would your engine, fuel filter poor will restrict fuel.
Your engine needs both to be clear to get the correct measure of both in order to perform well.
A restricted air intake will basically give more fuel, thus over fuelling and firing black smoke out the back under heavy load.
Im sure you know most of this stuff anyway but my main point would to use the very best engine oil and filter possible and as regular as possible.
The 130 TDI is almost bombproof and good oil/filter will maintain a healthy blood line to the unit.
    Good luck bud

is the EGR still hooked up ?? as under hard acceleration egr refeeds exaust into intake-thus puff of smoke if so I would pull the vac pipe off at the intake and block it with a 6mil bolt so No EGR-just fresh air into engine- because only vac pipe blocked the ECU is fooled into thinking it is still working-So no mil light on dash !! I have a3 pd 130 240,000 did have same prob untill a pal told me this we trick, worked a treat !!

As above EGR disable , inaccurate of ecu being fooled as egr isn't being monitored by ecu on earlier models as a 2002 won't prevoke an eml .

    2003 made cars will .

2 Stroke helps too + other benefits .

Interesting stuff, thanks for the response.. I’m aware I’m getting away from the original point of the thread here but how much 2stroke would one use per tank full?

    Thanks
