I ment to say vac pipes rot over time--so it might be a simple case of one or more vac pipes leaking_(you wouldnt hear any whistle as its sucking !) whitch could /will cause the same limp mode symptoms !!!

This sounds like a trans problem. When it happens, if you hit the gas, does the RPM increase while the power drops? If so, this is definitely trans and I am betting you have the tiptronic.

I had the same issue, limp mode in 6th on the highway and loss of power. Fixed it by replacing the intake manifold actuator ( it was leaking boost). It is a common fault.
