Hi all, I've been having issues past few months with car battery constantly losing charge. I assume it was just because it was old and needed replacing anyway.

I had to call RAC guy out who suggested the battery is much to small and that I need one with a higher power rating and cold-cranking-amp too. I currently have a 55A and CCA of 550.

    He suggested the following spec:

    110 (or 100)
    70+ amps
    680+ CCA

He did sell them, but said their prices are extortionate (£150-£200) for the size I need and to get one else where.

I've looked online using my car reg on a number of sites and they all come with different power ratings and sizes to each other let alone to what the RAC suggested.

I've managed to find some the right spec, but I'm concerned about the dimensions and what it will physically fit. I've seen one that's 314mm length, and I've tried the measure the battery tray, but can't quite reach it with out taking battery out first, but it's around 300ish mm.

Does anyone have any idea whether this would fit or a spec on the battery tray size from a manual perhaps? Also there is the fixing bracket, which i assume must be used to hold battery down. If get the 314mm and it fits the tray I won't be able to use the bracket as the last bolt thread is not located at the edge of the battery tray (see image).

    Any help appreciated.

as you have a petrol car, I would maybe get a 60 to 70 AH , if the car manual says 55 AH ; why pay more ?

CCA of 550 is not too bad actually

Did the RAC guy test the battery for dud cell(s) and alternator output ?

No point getting a battery if something else is causing a battery drain when engine is switched off for example

Hi, thanks for replying. He checked alternator and few other things as well as battery. When he tested initially he said battery was at 4V, which was much too low, considering I hadn't left lights on or anything.

He said for a 2L car you need more than 550CCA, especially during winter you also could do with more AH than 55. I've managed to find a 620CC 70AH width of 275 for £54 with a 36% discount from ECP, so will go for that. 3yr warranty.

Yes a derv 110 5 year can have 800 CCA and 85Ah , probably overkill for a petrol and I think a different clamp required , the next derv battery size down is 096 .

550CCA is plenty as I've just replaced a 10+ year old battery on a 2L petrol with a 540CCA and the old battery was 525 CCA .

Generally the longer guarantee 4/5 year are better quality with higher CCA & Ah .

Thanks for all your help guys. I got that CCA 620 70AH battery for £54 with a 3yr warranty.

Fitted just about, glad I didn't go for the 110 at 314mm.
