the better halfs 2010 beetle 1.4 16v, 28k miles is needing a bit of tlc which should earn some brownie points

main problem is intermittent non starting. Battery is ok. Steering lock is very difficult to release. Thinking the ignition switch and steering lock would be a good place to start. Does anyone have any other suggestions ? is the steering lock a serviceable part rather than repair and then fit a new ignition switch. Has anyone done a guide ?

Wipers dont always work. Already investigated and cleaned/greased the wiper mechanism which seemed to help for a while. Wondering if the stalk might be knackered from the force it takes to release the wheel lock ? could all be linked

also, airbag light stays on. Friendly indie reset it but comes back on again. Where is best to start troubleshooting - seats out, check wiring etc ?

any pointers or sharing of your previous experience would be gladly appreciated

    many thanks

    Brian

sounds like steering wheel lock/ ring

when you put the key in, can you move the steering up & down slightly to see if it helps ?

Some folks push or pull on the steering wheel to get in or out the car

Have you been on youtube to see if anyone has done it ?

Could have been that someone has taken the steering wheel off and disconnected the airbag. Some cars if you disconnect the airbag, need the Fault cleared after refitting. You need to go to VW Parts department & order the key barrel to suit the keys you have, as all connected to the ECU

The barrel for the key at this moment is your cheapest option & a code reader to clear the airbag fault ..........................

Having had a proper look at it it was as Niall suggested the ignition barrel. It has responded to some gentle working in of graphite lubricant and now works most of the time. £105 for a new one from VW so might persevere with the tlc approach. The battery voltage is slightly below 12V, so going to charge it up and see if that helps - simple stuff first

avoiding the other issues currently ! at least it starts better now
