Is there an easy way of checking the power steering reservoir without the tricky business of removing the n/s air filter box etc? I wonder if it can be accessed by getting underneath and removing the big plastic tray under the engine? I'd be grateful for any suggestions, also possibly a description of the knack of removing the air filter stuff without breaking anything!

Not sure about W12 but the V8TDI was a real pain for this. I got round it by shining a bright torch straight down the gap behind the NS headlamp which enabled me to see the reservoir which has a transparent strip on the side - hence you can see the level. Topping it up required extreme dexterity to remove the cap and then a turkey baster to put fluid in.

Thanks, EG. You are right - I can just see the level with a bright torch, but no way could I access the cap if I needed to! Fortunately the level was just above the minimum mark. I can find no mention of this in the handbook.

I did manage to remove the air filter apparatus on both sides - a very long handled philips screw driver is needed - and cleaned both air filters. The heavy duty spring band on the air hose was a pain, when off it crunched up the hose, collapsing down so much that the lugs were too far apart to get the pliers or mole wrench back on. Solution was to squeeze it in a vice, insert a jam jar into the now unscrunched hose, remove from vice and apply mole wrench to remove the jam jar and get it back into position on its mounting. Hope this might be helpful for someone in future!
