Hi all, hope you can shed some light on the poor MPG of my Passat.
    Its a 2003 1.9 TDI 130 Auto B5.5 with 150k miles.
Its got a very good service history and has been well looked after.
My problem: poor MPG. Its doing 33mpg average. @ £1.20 a litre, I put 25 litres in at a time (about £30) and it returns 180 miles and I drive like a grandma using the tiptronic box as much as poss to keep putting it in a higher gear to keep the rpm down. That equals 33mpg average. I may as well buy a V6 petrol!
So, I thought I would do a few things to help it out and try and up the mpg a little. Its got a new thermostat and coolant, a new MAF sensor and I've cleaned out the variable vanes in the turbo due to an over boost fault. It was fully serviced including air and fuel filter less than 2000 miles ago and I only use genuine VW parts. I've also had new brakes all round and have spun the wheels by hand to make sure they aren't binding at all. Its also got new tyres on it and I'm running them at 40psi to help with the mpg. Apart from me there's no extra weight in the car.
So what could cause this crap mpg? Is the fact that its an auto making it it thirsty (even though I try to drive it like a manual to keep the revs down). We bought this car because it was an estate, we had a TDI 130 Bora auto before and we would always get 40+ mpg easily out of it, driving normally.
What else can I try? Its not showing any faults on the ECU and drives absolutely spot on.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Depends on what sort of driving you do I suppose, I was getting 40+ with a 2.5 V6 TDi on a long run, cruise control made a +2 mpg difference. 230,000 miles on it. They did a comparison on an older car performance on a rolling road on 5th gear, first thing they did was stick red ex treatment in, I thought it would do sod all but added about 6bhp, may be worth a try?

I've just done a 25 mile motorway run at a constant speed of 70mph set by the cruise control and it showed an average of 42MPG on the dash. I think next I will try its coolant temperature sender, pig of a thing to change but after literally changing everything else I dont know what else to try. I have just been looking at an EGR delete kit on ebay that they say not only will stop the carbon build up in the inlet manifold, it will also increase the cars MPG. I could be wrong but with gentle driving I would expect the car to run early to mid 40's around town and into the 50's on a decent run?
