Hello folks - I've got a bit of an issue with my A6 and am hoping somebody can help me

    Vehicle details: 2002 A6 (C5) 3.0 V6 Avant Quattro (6-spd manual)
    Engine code: ASN
    ECU code: 8E0 907 411

I was having an issue where occasionally the speedo would drop to zero and the 'EPC' and CEL warnings would appear. I got myself a VCDS cable and confirmed this was intermittent signal from the G28 engine speed sensor. I changed the sensor twice but to no avail. Then last weekend the car failed to start entirely. VCDS told me there was now zero signal from the sensor.

To my way of thinking this means that either (a) there is a break in the signal wire, or (b) the engine speed sensor input pin on the ECU is faulty. Unfortunately I don't know which pin on the ECU connector I need to check continuity on. Does anyone have the pinout details for my ECU so I can (hopefully!) pin-down where the problem is? - I just need to know which pin and/or wire to check!!

    Any help much appreciated
    Tom

Thank you mate, that'd be a great help. Ironically I only bought the A6 when I sold my old 100 Avant as I wanted something more reliable!

That's fantastic, thank you mate - I'm away for a few days but I'll have a look as soon as I'm back. And just to check are those both signal inputs to the ECU? It would make sense as I know the crank position sensor references the engine speed sensor.

don't know, probably it would be an alternating signal, and you will need an oscilloscope to check it. Pin 82 is positive in the diagram, is a grey cable and pin 3 on the G28 connector. Pin 90 is negative, blue cable and pin 2 on the sensor connector. Pin 1 on the sensor connector goes to the engine ground.

Was the engine running when you are scaning the dtc?
