    Hi,

I bought a second-hand diesel Touran (1T) around a year ago and noticed in the engine bay that it had a Webasto auxiliary heater fitted. It is also listed in the VCD printout. It's there under the car but there's no controls for it on the instrument panel to control it and no remote key fob was supplied. The VCDS doesn't log any faults with the unit but it doesn't appear to come on when cold outside and the engine also cold.

    1. Could the unit just be deactivated and is there some way to activate/test the unit without buying the remote control key fob?
    2. If it is working I'd like to purchase the remote key fob and 'program'' it to work with the car. Does this require the my VCDS unit or does it require a trip to the dealer?

Any help with answering the above questions gratefully appreciated!

2 photos and partial VCDS printout follow...

somestimes it locks when fuel is low, and can be unlocked via vcds. also i think wouldnt come on if outside temperature is above +5. google it! they are common failures, especially pumps

    Function Test (Customer Service Start)

    Prerequisites:

    • Climate Control OFF
    • Enough Fuel in Fuel Tank (clearly NOT on reserve)
    • Battery charged
    • Coolant Temperature below 60 °C
    • Do NOT disconnect VAG-COM while performing this procedure.

    [Select]
    [18 - Aux. Heater]
    [Basic Settings - 04]
    Group 011
    [Go!]
    Activate the Basic Setting.
    [ON/OFF/Next]
Observe Field 3, it represents the current status of the system.
    [Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

Thanks WillUK. I'll give the Customer Service Start procedure a go with the VCDS. Looks like I might get the 6 degrees C temperatures soon now in Scotland!

As far as I understand things, it only fires up with a cold engine and less than 6degC outside temperature. It heats the water system so the engine comes up to temperature quicker. If for any reason it fails or doesn't complete it's start up sequence 3 times it will shut down completely and need resetting. You'll soon know if it's running because it can produce a lot of smoke which depending on how old the car is, will come from the osf wheel arch on early models, and under the middle of the car on later builds, an effect known as 'Cloud Touran', should only last a few minutes though!

Thanks for the information Hair Bear. My apologies for not replying earlier as I've been away on holiday for the past couple of weeks. I'll reset the the device using the VCDS and wait for the morning temperature to drop low enough to turn it on. I'll post success (or otherwise!)

    Thanks again.

Also, it won't run if the fuel light is on!

Good news WillUK and Hair Bear. What I didn't realize until I tried it this morning was that the VCDS allows you to switch the auxiliary heater on and off as well as resetting it. I've now connected the VCDS to the Touran, switched the aux. heater on and confirmed that the heater temperature and coolant temperature both increase (~75 degrees and ~52 degrees respectively) after running the heater only for around 10 minutes. No 'Touran Cloud' evident but I can hear the pump/fan running. The heater also cycles through "start" "full throttle" and "cooldown" notifications on the VCDS as I switch it on and off. So the next plan is to see if I can purchase a compatible keyfob remote control for the aux. heater. Do you know if there is a problem "binding" a replacement remote control to work with my Touran or is that a dealer-only job?

Thanks again for your help getting the unit reset and tested.

Well done. I don't know about remote starting the heater, but there was a chap in Denmark called Kjeld who had his Touran set up to somehow remote start the engine for warming up. I've no clue how it was done and unfortunately he passed away a year or so ago now. If anyone else here knew Kjeld they may be able to help.
