Help! the drivers door on my 2002 Golf Mark 4 (GTi) has suddenly jammed shut.

The electrics and central locking are all OK (buttons all go up and down fine) and the cables are intact and not broken but I cannot open the door (either from inside or outside using the handles)

I have searched various posts on the forum and no-one seems to have an answer to getting a door open without major damage. I can see one of the spline bolts on the side of the drivers door if I open the back door but this would not help remove a damaged lock. If I destroyed the door card would I be able to remove the inner steel door panel or not? I have changed the lock in the past with no problems.

Any Ideas? Is it possible to access the fitting on the B Pillar (to which the lock catches) by removing trim or not? Is there an airbag in the B Piilar?

Any help would be much appreciated - I can use the passenger door and climb across into the drivers seat but need this sorted!

    Thanks!

Using the key in the lock makes no difference. The button comes up but the door still won't open.

I would try a bit more effort while pulling/pushing to see if it may release, the door may be stuck tight on the receiver.
I would also try jacking at the normal point, while trying to open. The body flexes a little while jacking.
Maybe no help but worth a try.

Hi. I have tried everything. Pulling the door up and down (with the window down). Using both inner and outer handles at the same time. No luck. Is there a way of getting at the receiver via the B Pillar even if that means drilling out the bolts for the receiver?

Bang around the barrel area with your fist a few times whilst trying everything you already tried.

Hi - Finally got it sorted! Phew!!! The problem has been found and the fix is surprisingly simple. What was wrong was that the lock mechanism was not "resetting" and if it does not reset it won't open on either the inside or the outside door handle. The reason was that the little plastic adjuster on the outside handle cable was too tight and not allowing the lock to go back far enough after opening. I simply flicked off the little plastic adjuster by holding the outer handle open and then the door opened using the inner handle. I could then remove the part with the key lock and re-adjust the outer handle cable using the plastic thing. A great relief as I was about to attack the inner door card....
