    Hi Guys im in the middle of doing my balance shaft on my 2.0 BMR tdi and I cannot work out which locking tool I should use the one with the silver knob I cannot get to line up and seat correctly and the one with the black knob I can get to seat but the timing marks do not line up correctly and both tools are two teeth different so which tool should I be using

    The correct one for a BMR is the T10100 which aligns the crank arrow at roughly 1pm. To ensure this is correct, with the top timing belt cover removed, you should be able to insert the 2 cam pins into the centre of the lower left oval slot (exhaust cam) and lower right oval slot (inlet cam) to fully lock the timing. The cam pins should go right in as they have to enter the 2 drilled holes in the camshaft bearing frame behind when the toothed cam sprocket 'windows' are at the top of the cams.

    Edit: Just to add - if the arrow on your locking tool is on a tooth then it can only align with an arrow pointing at a corresponding groove on the crank. Similarly if the arrow on your locking tool is pointing at a groove it can only align with an arrow pointing on the tooth of your crank. Your crank has the arrow pointing at a groove which therefore can only match the locking tool with an arrow on a tooth of the locking tool - the T10100 tool.
