Could someone offer me some advice please? Since having a minor service and cambelt change at a very good local VW independent specialist garage 3 weeks ago the STOP/START will not activate. I acknowledge this may just be a coincidence. I have had the car from new (Nov 2012) and it is well maintained - it has done 44k miles. I took the car back to the garage - they ran a diagnostic and could not find a fault. After a test drive (no improvement) they disconnected and reconnected the battery and this temporarily fixed the problem - the next day the STOP/START refused to activate once again. I read that it could be the battery (which has not caused me any problems) so I re-charged it using a smart charger but to no avail. I have tried everything. Long journeys/AC off etc but although the STOP/START indicator activates it has the line through it and doesn't activate no matter what I try.

    Advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Start/stop systems can be pretty fickle.
A drop in ambient temperature can cause the system to cancel stops.
Does the problem persist when vehicle is fully warm and with electrical consumers switched off?

Thanks for your reply. The problem persists even when the engine is fully up to temperature and no matter what the outside temperature. Switching everything electrical off makes no difference either. The garage told me it had checked that the gears in neutral sensor was working fine.

The clutch pedal switch can be an issue. Worth checking also.

battery issue. no water in the battery.does not matter who you take your car for a service, main dealer or side street garage, they DO NOT CHECK battery water.this is my second MK6 Golf 1.6 tdi Bluemotion and on both cars when bought the STOP and START did not work because battery was dry , topped up with battery water and ALWAYS WORK regardless of what ever the condition.

Sorry to hijack the thread; can you tell me what battery you had? On my Golf 1.6 TDI I have an exide. It looks like the cell top comes off but its not shifting and I'm just ruining the plastic.

As regard to which ever garage you take your car to be maintained whether its the main dealer, kwik fit, or local garage nobody checks battery water therefore over time battery becomes dry.The battery makers deliberately put the sticker over the screws so cannot get to open them to check battery water.
You need to check if you have water in the battery.
My daughter in law bought a Golf in September (second one, first one had an accident) on both occasions STOP/START did not work and when I check the battery it was dry, topped it up and STOP /START worked and they were maintained by the main dealer.
The weather also has an effect.

The battery that came with the car AGM 68 Amp its t VW brand. If the battery is a seal one then the filler screws will not undue. How to undue the cell tops is to use flat screw driver and make a slightly deep cut on the outer edge and tap gently.
