Hi Guys, I need some help please. When I bought my A6 the car came with only one very damaged (cosmetically) key fob, I bought a repair case from eBay and swapped the internals and the blade over no problems. Roll on a few months and I decided to buy a few spare virgin/repo keys from eBay, my locksmith cut and programmed the Immob / ID48 pills no problem but told me that the remote fob PCB's were for the A4 model and won't work with my car - the eBay listing absolutely indicated they were and the seller insists so but they can often not be relied on for accurate info, The locksmith told me I need to match them by cross referencing from the original part number printed on the remote fob - which is long gone in the bin! I don't even recall seeing a number as I usually take pictures of everything but it was genuine as I had to melt the copper/brass pins out. Is there a specific part number for my 2003 A6 avant? so I can match them up.... Appreciate the help if anyone can advise me the number. Thanks S.

There are different remotes depending on the frequency. I bought a chinese key some time ago, it was 433MHZ and the p/n was 4D0 837 231 K. It coded correctly with the car once you have the PIN.

Thanks fella, I have a Chinese 231 N key fob but the locksmith said it's only for the A4 - I've been into the cluster (35, 21) with VCDS and he is indeed telling the truth, when coding the remote's the car is only recognising the genuine one. I've been trying to find out what the part number is from the reg but the local main dealer is being a tool and won't give me any info! Someone has suggested it's the 231 A but I've seen other posts over various forums stating the 231 A and N are the same part. I'm hoping maybe someone with the same model and year could help me by popping their fob open and checking the number. Or just risk another £15 on the luck of the draw.

Wich PR code do you have?

    PR-5D1? 6V1?

The transponder in the key should code to the ignition as long is virgin and you have the pin or SKC. You can just use a remote from another key (maybe an used one) and link it to the CCM to open the doors. In my case, I could not link the remote to t he CCM until I had the key coded to the ignition.

The key ID48 transponders were all coded to the Immo without a problem, the keys all open the car manually and all start the car fine! It's just the remote central locking part/boards that are incompatible with the car, I was looking at a few genuine remote parts on eBay for £15-20 each which I would swap into the new cases but I don't know which one to get... 231A, 231 K? I know the 231 N don't work as I have a two Chinese ones - unlikely both are duff but you never know.

That would depend on the PR code (and the VIN):

    (17) 4D0837231N sender unit for radio- controlled central locking 3 buttons
    Model data: PR-5D1+6V1

    (17) 4D0837231K sender unit for radio- controlled central locking
    F 4B-3-000 001>>
    3 buttons
    Model data: PR-5D1

Thanks for the info mate, I've just been to another dealer and 'kind of' tricked them into giving me the part number from the reg, it does indeed turn out to be the 4D0837231K - £100 inc VAT.... LOL! Is that PR code something I can discover using VCDS or is it in the handbook or something? It's sorted now but I'm still on a steep learning curve with this being my 1st Audi and keen to learn and forward knowledge where I can. Thanks again. :-)

Just picked up a genuine used key with the same part number but for VW - £9.50 delivered.

Job should be a good 'un once I've swapped it into a repair case.

Everything went to plan, the '231 K' part was the correct one and coded to the car after a new battery was installed, I had to use VCDS though as the simple coding technique wouldn't take.

Thanks for the advice, those who contributed.

PR codes should be in the manual or in a sticker in the boot, near the spare wheel
