2006 Audi A4 Avant 2.0 TDI Se 170 smoking...

Hello all,

I have a 2006 Audi A4 Avant 2.0 TDI SE 170, with 116,000 miles. However, unfortunately the car has an issue!

When cold, it starts fine, but then the car will start to shudder and smoke. The smoke is a fair bit and is like a white/grey colour. The car will drive fine. The shuddering slowly decreases, then once it is fully warmed up, it stops. there are no warning lights on the dash.

I called the AA, who plugged into their diagnostic machines, no error codes, but the AA guy seem convinced it was the EGR valve. He then put a blank in it, which caused it to stop smoking. I didn't see any error codes either.

I then took it to my mechanic and asked to him to clean the EGR valve out, and remove the blank. He did that, and then I had the car carbon cleaned. It drives very well, lots of power but it still shudders and smokes from cold. However, I checked the service history and the EGR valve was replaced in July!

What could cause this? Any ideas? Its a real shame as I really like the car!

Is it white smoke or steam ?? keep an eye on your water level as the egr cooler is known to leak which drips into the inlet then in turn gets hot and comes out the exhaust as steam

It's actually stop smoking now. It starts up fine but shudders a bit. Once warm, it's fine, although it runs a little lumpy.
It doesn't use coolant. The smoke was white/grey when it did smoke.
I did put some DPF cleaner and some millers treatment and Shell V Power and took it on a run two days ago. It runs a lot better

Update, for anyone who is interested, took it to a mechanics, who changed injector seals. Still not better. They then advised injector, which was changed, still no better. I called the AA again, who said the EGR is the issue. They fitted a blank, which seems to 90% cure the problem, athough it still runs a little lumpy. I have left this, but now have an engine management light on ! Any ideas?

Replace the EGR valve

or look at replacing glow plugs

Think the EGR is stuck open or closed causing the unburnt diesel and when car is warm, it then doesn't make any difference

Scan the car for a Fault Code , this will help !!!!!!!!!

Egr stuck open rather than closed , all vehicles run better with a closed egr it was how the engine was intended to run breathing filtered clean air not it's own excrement .
