Hi. Just bought a really nice VW Polo and it came with only one basic key. It is a fixed blade with the small button which only operates a small bulb to see the lock. There is nothing else inside the plastic...just bulb, button battery.
I need a SECOND KEY cut and bought a blank off web...thought I could then simply get locksmith to cut it. He says "needs programming" or useless.
There is no sign of transducer or chip....anyone help please?
CanI just get it cut only?
    Thanks!

The locksmith is correct. Both keys will need programmed to the immobilizer.

    Thanks Jim.

    Quotes seem to be
    1) VW dealers = £195 for one coded key
    2) Locksmith Auto specialist types (Cut and CODED etc)= £85 for 1 / £110 for 2
    3) Locksmith (NON-CODED) key cut = £20 (will only open door...will NOT work immobiliser).

I have read that some people get 2 keys CUT ONLY (£40 for 2?) and take the immobiliser key and leave it in the car near ignition...this then allows the new cut keys to fully work?
Also...others have taken the tiny "chip" out of the original key and TAPE IT under the ignition barrel...thereby ALL cut keys will fully function?

Anyone done this and confirm successful?
    Thanks all!

    Yeah, that should work.

I had to wire up a VW engine that had been fitted into a Suzuki Vitara a while back and that's how I got the engine running. By fitting the ring antenna (the coil around the ignition barrel) from the VW with the VW key placed inside the ring. I just cable tied it up behind the dash. So if you remove your ring antenna and place your original chipped key in the center of the ring, the non chipped keys should be able to start the engine.
