I have an Audi A3 Sportback 2.0 TDI Sline...

I was coming off the motorway and I came to stop at the traffic lights before a round about and I could feel the car/engine losing power and eventually shutting down. The battery light was showing on the display and I tried restarting the car and it came back to life so I drove off, but after a couple of minutes the car lost power again, but this time it did not start up.

When the recovery guy turned up, he popped the bonet, had a look at the timing belt and said that was the cause. He said that it would be a big job because the engine would have been damaged and he even tried asking if I wanted to buy a Pug 205 off him that he fixed up after it had a similar issue with the timing belt.

I checked my paperwork and I had the timing belt, full kit and water pump changed in December 2016 by a local garage, so I would be surprised if the timing belt is the cause so soon.

If anyone has any ideas as to the cause or what I should do next, I would really appreciate it.

I am thinking it is time for me to change my car, does anyone have any ideas for the best way to sell the car please?

    Thank you

Take the top cover off the timing belt and have a look!,you can tell if the belts broke as it would have turned over on the starter much easier than normal.

I would be surprised if it was the belt, my expectation would be the tensioner stud has failed, this little £1 piece of **** has destroyed more BKD engines than I can guess at. Because we had one fail on us about ten years ago we ALWAYS fit a new one and now proper quality kits such as genuine and some aftermarket also contain the stud, when they don't we stock them and change them anyway.
