My steering wheel functions have stopped working and I have been informed by the AA that the slip ring needs replacing. I am trying to locate the part I need (but not from VW). I am having trouble finding the exact part number so that I can source one without being held at the mercy of VW.

Is there any way I can find out the slip ring part number without having a diagnostics check run by VW or another garage. I have a guy at my local garage who will replace it for me but I need to know the part number.

Many thanks for any answers received.

    Terrence

A friend of mine had the same problem a few days ago. He's car is B6 (59 plate) so he bough a clock spring from eBay for £15 as there are plenty of them. It turned out his steering wheel is B7 type and thet's where the problem starts.
He managed to find just 1 second hand one for £90 (new ones are 200-400) and just fit it today. The steering controls and horn now work but air bag light is still on, and what's weird, ABS light and tyres pressure light shows up. I have explained to him, that almost any part on VAG cars has to be coded in, and/or have the component protection removed. He will probably bring the car to me tomorrow so I can try to do that.
He also gave me his faulty clock spring which I will try to repair. You may see me offering that repair on my website Instrument cluster repairs in Rugby - totaltronics.com but also, that clock spring will be for sale once it's repaired. So stay tuned, I will post an update here if you're interested.

The part no is 5K0.953.569.AB and here's the picture:

There's a Motorola MC9S12 inside of it, which contains your VIN and all that sort of stuff.
