Update - on closer inspection the cross panel was too damaged so it's gone to salvage. I'll keep a lookout for it back on the road in a few weeks ha!

Hi all, well, I managed just over three months in my totally mint MKV SE before a **** in a Volvo didn't bother slowing down & smashed into the back of me while waiting at a roundabout. Thank goodness I had my handbrake on and he didn't hurt/kill anyone. Just found out my car is now a Cat D and not viable for the insurers to repair. Sadly the cross panel the tailgate locks onto is bent, insurers say it needs a new panel welding in so they're not interested in a repair. Sides, roof and floorpan seem fine. I haven't agreed to the insurers offer as I think it's too low, and it's proving impossible to find a replacement Golf as mechanically/cosmetically good as mine. As a Type 2 owner I'm not scared of serious DIY, but not sure if the panel is something I could fix. I'd be grateful for any thoughts & advice! Cheers
