    hi all,

i have a 2011 s3 with CDLA engine, the engine idles fine and even drives fine but it has a slight knocking noise (sounds bottom end) when you rev at around 2,000-3,000 rpm. i have dropped the oil and pulled the sump, sump is clean with no debris, so now removed balance shaft/oil pump to get to the rods. i've checked for radial play on the rods but found nothing, the rod caps have been removed and shells checked and they all are looking good. the only play i can find is very slight axial or side to side play between the rod and crankshaft. i'm unsure what the tolerances are regarding this, on checking elsawin all i can find is axial play regarding the shells and not rod to crank (see attached pic). can anyone confirm if this is correct for what i need or what the tolerances are.

    thanks in advance

I'd read that to mean axial play of the rods when fitted to the crank pin and measure it with a feeler gauge. Are you fitting new shells or checking them with plastigauge?

Thank you for the reply, just checking the tolerances at the moment, the shells look perfectly fine no sign of wear at all.
