Hi guys considering buying a passat 4motion and wondering what the general thinking is on them? Tow a caravan quite a bit and also live in romper area so if winter hits hard it should make life easier. Thanks in advance

Have been looking at both estate and saloon, take it the 4wd system is reliable enough. Currently have an 06 sport so happy enough with the rest to be honest

Ive got one, 58plate, 2.0 tdi cr 4mo saloon

In the snow/crappy weather so long as you have good tyres you will drive past lots of other cars just sat there spinning their wheels lol. Cant beat that smug feeling you can feel the grip if you chuck it round corners, definitely a more planted sure footed feeling, and nothing better than driving past a much newer audi driver just sat there spinning away lol Tyres will make a big difference. put some cheapo chinese brand on and 4mo wont help you. Tyre wear is also slightly higher than a normal 2wd car. Ive got Nokian AllWeather tyres on at £110 a tyre.

But usual b6 things to watch out for, oil pump balance shaft, epb button, rear calipers. The road tax on a 4mo is slightly higher than a non-4mo (I think its a tenner more).

And make sure it has had the haldex oil service. Needs to be done by 80k I believe. If it hasnt be very wary, if the haldex system fails due to lack of oil change its new mortgage time.

Is it worth it over a regular 2wd, erm, depends where you live. In the 5 years ive had mine, it probably has been worth it about 5 times in total ive needed the 4wd and that's been on hills or bends and in really bad weather.

A couple of winters back when it was REALLY bad, I had to pull 3 cars out of their drives in my street and one was a bloody nissan qashqai thingy! My car was the only one going to shops and back and forth, everyone else was either stuck at home or braving a taxi lol

4wd is like a condom imho, id rather have it and not need it, instead of need it and not have it, but then again a condom is much cheaper than a busted haldex unit and the costs incurred!

The previous owner was a caravaner and he had a towbar fitted, when I bought it he said it was rock solid towing his caravan.

Also, be realistic, just because its 4wd doesnt mean it will drive through anything, put cheapo tyres on and drive on ice you are still going to slip and slide. 4mo isnt a magic bullet.

For me, its been rock solid, never let me down in hills and in bad weather, would I buy another one? hell yeah! 4wd for me or nothing

    EDIT
Just wanted to say, my brothers got an audi a4 saloon 09 plate, not quattro, whenever i drive his car it feels like the front of the car isnt connected to the rear, its a weird feeling, theres nothing wrong with his car its just a 'feeling' and he keeps telling me to not to drive hard into and out of corners, its not a quattro!, its just a weird feeling having driven a 4mo for such a long time to get into a 2wd car. Doesnt feel right, same with wifes polo, ok a polo isnt exactly a passat but same with hers, feels the front isnt connected to the rear....

I know the usual problems with the B6 as I've had 2 of them, to be honest I haven't had much problems with getting about. I love the b6 even with the problems, I was looking at a couple (estate and saloon) around 80-90k with fsh

If you can afford decent tyres, the extra road tax and insurance, AND if the haldex oil has been changed, imho buy it, worth having the 4wd but thats just me.

Dont buy into that sealed for life crap that the dealers give you, it can be changed and has to be changed (haldex oil that is).

Mine came with, parking sensors, rns510, bluetooth kit, mfsw, auto wipers/lights, auto hold, electric blind, sadly no leather or heated seats just sports cloth seats.
