Need help my girlfriend had her bag stolen with her beetle key in as well as her driving licence so have our address as well as her main car key, just want to know what is my best option or what's best to do to stop anyone using the now stolen key to gain access to her car or take it, as vw quoted over £600 for a new lock kit. Her car is a 2005 vw beetle 1.9tdi.

I’d pay VW or you may have a car insurance claim to add to the bag theft. I’d also park it somewhere away from the address in the bag until it’s fixed

Could buy a lock replacement kit off eBay, however they aren’t going to have the same encryption as a VW system. They stolen key will also still start the engine

Does her insurance include lost or stolen keys? If you don't report it, I suppose the insurance will try and get out of the claim as well. The other option could be to try a locksmith and fit a steering lock / remove fuses until it's sorted.

Her insurance doesn't cover the keys unfortunately she's only been driving a year so her excess is high as well so not worth the claim plus would more than likely write the car off as only cost 1200 lol, I've got her a steering lock for now going to try a few options as don't really want to be swapping ecu's and clocks out.

Does breakdown cover cover the keys maybe or possibly home insurance. Failing that sell the car or risk someone coming for it and losing £1200
Assuming it's been reported to the police can they suggest anything?

Key insurance is only around £20 a year as an add on to some insurance policy's, well worth it in my opinion (too late for you now though). I took out key insurance two years ago at renewal when I changed insurance company, lost my keys six weeks later, they couldn't have been better, wanted to send a locksmith out there & then (this was with RAC insurance).
