A4 Avant tailgate bike rack

I'd like a rack to carry 2 or 3 bikes on the tailgate of my B9 Avant, and the advice I get varies. Thule don't do one, the Audi sales rep says you can't fit one, and their spares department never got back to me. Roofbox.co.uk say there aren't any - "It's not possible to fit a rear door fitting bike carrier to this vehicle, this is due to the design and/or strength of the tailgate."

Has anyone found (and do you recommend) a suitable rack?

I've already got a couple of racks for the roof bars, but I can't carry 4 bikes on the roof. If push comes to shove, I might have to pay for a towbar, but I'd rather not do that

Well Iv'e certainly had a rear bike carrier on my a4 with 2 adult bike on but would not recommend it,its a bit unstable plus if its low down you need a lights on a tailboard to stay legal,mine was just a universal bike carrier,tow bar option is far superior but costly.
