    Hi all,
    I have recently got this car.
    2006 Audi A6 2.0 TFSI.
    Mileage;- 147k mls.
    Engine code; - BPJ.
    Trans code;- GVC. Manual.
    I had done about 100 mls with no apparent problem.
    Then one day having started up and reversing down a slight incline, on applying the brakes I heard a loud “tappety” rattle from the engine which lasted for about 30 seconds, and immediately the MIL light came on.
    On checking with VCDS it showed;-
    1 Fault Found:
    000017 - Bank 1: Camshaft A (Intake)
    P0011 - 004 - Retard Setpoint not Reached (Over-Advanced)
    I cleared the fault a few times, but on driving it again the fault returns.
    One day this rattle returned again for about 30 seconds while sitting in the car at tickover.
    I have checked oil pressure with guage (at oil sensor take off) and pressure is normal both hot and cold and at tickover and at 2800 rpm.
    Having done approx. another 100 mls and clearing the fault again it has not returned.
    Have I got an oil sludge problem?
    I haven’t changed the oil but it looks fresh on the dipstick.
    Should I renew chain etc ?
    I want to do a proper job on this, so can anyone please advise me.

    I would say it is oil pressure related so off with the sump ASAP BUT that VVT unit is renowned for wear problems, there is a VAG rebuild update kit for them.

    Thanks Crasher for your reply.
    I have taken your advice to drop the sump.
    All going ok but I have a problem with the two hidden rear sump studs.
    I have used a 5mm allen key, both ball end and standard, but only getting slight purchase and then slipping.
    I have also used a ¼ drive skt 10mm and knuckle joint with no engagement possible on studs.
    I am using a lighted bore camera in the recess and can see clearly.
    I have heard of a “recess” in the flywheel to aid access to studs but I cannot see this, having rotated flywheel numerous times, with camera in recess.
    I haven’t used a wobble extension with socket.
    Stud heads look in good condition when viewed up close with snake camera.
    I am aware of Audi/VW tool – T10058- which is a ball headed allen key. I have equivalent tool already.
    Please can anyone advise me.

    If a good fit ball ended key is slipping I imagine it has been off before and the key way is damaged. I would try a wobbly end 1/4" Drive 10mm short socket but if that fails you will have to pull the box and remove the flywheel for better access.

    Thanks again Crasher for your response.
    I have used a new ball end allen key and hammered it in lightly to maximise grip and succeeded in removing both hidden studs. I found that they were tightened way above spec, judging by effort required to remove them.
    With sump removed I found little if any evidence of sludge, just a few granules at centre of pick up strainer which I flushed away. Strainer was at least 95% clear. Sump was also clear with only brown deposit on upper sump wall.
    So can anyone advise me what to replace now to sort out the fault in my first post.
    I appreciate you experienced Audi guys opinion, as I want to definitively sort this in the one go, so to speak.
    Oh, also I find the oil filter housing a pig to remove. I have the correct socket and even with a great deal of pressure it hasn’t budged. Any tips anyone?

    I expect it will be a worn VVT unit. This is the typical main parts list, you MUST use the T10252 cam lock plate

    06F 103 107 G housing £510.76
    06F 109 088 J camshaft adjuster unit £366.14
    06F 109 217 A tensioner - chain £89.84
    06D 109 229 B timing chain £59.31
    06F 103 483 D gasket £23.82

    All plus VAT
