I have been having a few issues with the gearbox in my 3.0 biTDi; its now 2.5 years and 22k old- the first was at 6 months old and the car would attempt to engage 7th 8th while still driving in 8th gear. This was fixed by a remap of the gearbox ECU. Then about 6 weeks ago I had it "bang" down through the gears from 5/4/3, again the gearbox ECU was remapped with a software update; the car now seems o hold 7th gear for an age, 45-70mph under super gentle acceleration and when it does engage 8th it is super quick want to change back to 7th and then rev faster. I have been overridding this with the paddles but it is now beginning to annoy me as accelerating by 2mph should not require a downchange and flare of revs??

Does anyone have any suggestions or is this normal? Thanks.
I have experienced exactly the same problem. My car is a 2016 BiTDi and has 19k miles on it. In March this year it went in for its MOT and had a few warranty issues dealt with. While it was in a couple of service campaign items applied, namely 23X6 and S405 and I was informed at least one of these involved a software update although the 12 year old service assistant was unable to say exactly what software, e.g. ECU.

When driving at 70mph on a perfectly flat dual carriageway gearbox insists it needs to be in 7th gear at approx. 1900rpm. If I select 8th (i.e. M8) via the paddle shift the engine drops to 1200rpm (i.e. peak torque). However, shortly afterwards the car reverts back to 7th (i.e. D7). This is absolutely bloody infuriating as it DIDN'T used to do this!

I contacted Audi Customer Services and they merely suggested I took the car back to the dealer for investigation. I am reluctant to do so, however, as I faith in them has diminished greatly for reasons I'll not go into here. I'm concerned that they will want to charge me lots of £££s just to have a look as it is no longer in warranty (two months out).

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I am still having the same issue, after another 5k miles and the gearbox apparently "learning" how I drive, it still wont hold 8th gear at 70mph. The solution i have found is to knock the gear lever to manual and let it "lock" to 8th gear. This is great so long as you remember to change back up if you slow down but it has resulted in mega economy with up to 48/49mpg being achieved on the motorway cruise according to the computer.

I've found a similar fix is to use the paddle to shift to M8 from D7 once at 70mph then go to cruise control which appears to keep M8 selected. Similar mpg improvements also noted.
However, I still believe we shouldn't be having to do this I wonder just how fast we need to be going for the car to think 'Time for 8th perhaps!'

My 2014 bitdi I goes into 8th at 62mph. I can get it into 8th at 60 if I use the paddle. I know this because I tow a caravan with it and use 62 as my limit when towing to maximise fuel economy from use of 8th gear. The car has its original software.

I notice the box loses itself occasionally, especially when approaching a motorway exit roundabout on a downhill. It crashes down abruptly then for some reason.

Sorry to restart this but did anyone get anywhere with this issue. I see that this was started some time ago and it recently started on my 2015 bitdi a7. I had a gearbox oil change on the car @ just short of 60k in October when I purchased the car and it was great no issues at all. I appreciate it is a 'sealed for life' but from talking to transmission specialists in the past I understand it to still be advisable to change the oil.

In febuary i took it to audi for its first oil service since purchasing the car and a software update and a few recalls were done and ever since it has been a nightmare.

At roundabouts, it stutters like it cant decide what gear to be in, but it can happen between any gearshift. Its been in and out of audi 4 times since they reopened from covid lockdown.

Gearbox reset, clutch biting points adjusted, level and temp of gearbox oil checked, software update the lot. They juts had it two days no faults found drove it and say the issue never manifested and I drive it home and its up and down gears sat on the motorway like it can't make its mind up with a downshift to 5th seeming just as many describe on here. Clunky.

I have to say that when the clutch biting points were adjusted I did have a better drive for 3 weeks, then the rain came hammering down and it was driving and acting up constantly which is mind boggling.

I jumped in the other day and started the car, the fans and ac came on, hit the ac button and the car engine stopped like i had pressed the start/stop button. Fire the car up again and repeat with the same result. Start the car again and the car feels like its doing the gear judder but sat in park.

0 faults 0 ideas from audi... gutted.

Any help or advice would be appreciated!

    Cheers!

The only complaint I have for the BiTdi ZF box is that it (in my car) occasionally gets confused when you are in 3rd gear and off throttle coasting to a junction (or braking gently) and then you turn in and give it a little throttle - just a moderate amount. Suddenly it decides it wants 2nd and can be quite a clunky down change, almost a "bang". Does not always do it - in fact rarely does it - but it's annoying.

Now I did mention this to my Audi dealer and asked about gearbox firmware updates and the said there were none and that they could not do them because the vehicle is certified for MPG etc with the factory shipped firmware. Credible enough (i.e. if they remapped the engine it would not comply with the factory MPG and probably emissions stats)... but seems like I smell a rat if cjmcb has has a new set of firmware loaded.
@cjmcb - are you sure they actually loaded new firmware or did they just reset the "learning" on the box? It is supposed to learn your driving style and adapt ...
I get the same issue but it’s infrequent so not a problem
