Buying a Golf (up to a year old) for a family member and was wondering what engine would be the one to go for between 1.4 TSI 125 PS and the 1.6 TDI 110 PS. It will be mostly low mileage urban driving so fuel is not a huge consideration… more concerned about any known problems for a car that might be kept for 5 years or so. If it was the diesel it would be getting (at least) one long run per week.

If there is a better choice of engine for an urban runabout then please let me know... would the 2.0 TDI be your choice?

For mostly low mileage urban driving I would choose the 1.4 TSI 125PS petrol of the two engines

The diesel comes into its own for longer journey work otherwise the DPF (diesel particular filter) would be regenerating too frequently..

    Thanks for the info

I should have explained the unusual situation… on the few days it will be used there won’t be many short journeys or cold starts even though it’s mostly city driving. With at least one longer run a week and running hot when it is in use I thought it would be ok?

It was TSI all the way until I read all the stories about belt tensioners and drinking oil in later life that swayed me back to diesel. I’m not even sure if the 125 uses a chain though.

Also, does the 125 have ACT or is that only on the 140/150 engines?

Regardless of miles, hot or cold I'd go 1.4TSI all the way. It is silky smooth in any (122/138/148) guise and sips the fuel. Reliability wise, I'd imagine DPF and throttling software updates on the Derv would be far worse. I'm not totally up to speed but imagine the 122 would be more reliable than the ACT. So that answers that question the 122 is not ACT but our experience shows little gain and low miles means less still.

We have the 138 ACT with DSG 2013 model. The DSG is a pain and having been back several times since the last software update in Dec 16 is, in my opinion, the Achilles Heel of our car. We do journeys of 2 to 10 miles and it is averaging 45MPG. We get over 50 on longer trips. Shove that up your AdBlue spout. Auto is more economical as it has a higher 7th gear but I'd still go manual for longevity. Other than the 'box it has been 100% reliable since we bought it at 18 months old and it has never used any oil.

Add that the DPF never likes short journeys. It will regen on the long ones but still prefers to remain "clean" and hot.

Residuals for small diesels are rock bottom and unlikely to recover soon. Do your maths before thinking you've found a smokey bargain!

Whichever one you go for (personally I'd get the petrol) get the dsg if it's mostly urban driving. You'll never go back.
