    I am interested in a 2017 GTD that's done 11 miles. It's a Cat D.

The response to my enquiry is:

"The car has done 11 miles, the reason for the cat d was it was in a dealership when a fire started and some of the vehicles were close to the fire therefore some of the plastic on the car got melted/damaged, so they have been replaced and fixed that’s all."

The car is about 80% market value, so a good deal to me (driving it, not selling it).

    Some my questions are:

Why is it Cat D - why has an insurer classified it as not economical to repair? Does that mean it's had significant damage due to the fire/smoke?

What are the risks of buying this car?

The biggest risk is likely to be when you come to sell. If you keep it for 5+ years then this might not be an issue but the market for Cat C or Cat D is massively reduced making the prices lower and increasing the time taken to find a buyer.

Worth a quick call to your insurer to confirm they cover Category D cars as well.

Could easily stink of smoke inside. I suspect, like water damage, fire damage is immediate write off.

I`ve just bought a stolen/recovered cat d 2016 GTD that has only done 6200 miles which only needs a front bumper and undertrays.
Best thing you can do with the one your talking about is to view and try, make sure everything is how it should be
Not all cat D vehicles are bashed and repaired.

Is that the black one reg FG17.....?
