My car came with only one key, and as the previous owner and his wife are deceased it's no use asking the seller about another one.

The local VAG dealer quoted me a figure for a new key so high my brain rejected it, so I can't remember, but seeing a recent post suggests they can't code one anyway.

I tried the local Mister Minit, who can code keys for other contemporary cars, but he said no possible.

But I see in the topic 1995 Audi A4 Immobiliser issue - Scrap ? that I could get the ECU decoded, meaning a new key would simply have to be cut to match, and not coded.

Thats correct . Also look at your key is there letters on the key blade? If so this is the profile. Go on Ebay and buy a blank with same profile. Get it cut to the old key.

Thanks, Flapperjack. I have found the information on the key blade - its profile is HAA.

Via eBay France I have found a company (in Germany) who can supply a new key, cut from a photo of the existing key, together with an unprogrammed transponder, so if I could programme it I would not have to risk sending my ECU away to get it decoded.

My car does not have remote locking, only the immobiliser system controlled by the key being turned in the ignition switch.

I have a VAG 1552 but only very basic instructions for it, and have been unable to find information on line on key programming for keys with immobiliser but without remote locking.

Can anyone tell me the procedure for programming the new transponder, using VAG1552, please?

Lucky I didn't hold my breath waiting for a reply

I Googled appropriate French phrases and found a car key specialist, providing on the spot service to people locked out of their cars, and all kinds of duplicate keys, only an hour's drive from us. Lucky, as there seem to be very few in France.

Turned out, after some time spent trying to extract the PIN for the key from the ECU, that it doesn't have one as expected. The key has an ID13 transponder chip, not the expected ID48 chip, so new chips could be programmed directly from the information on the chip in the existing key. One clever machine cut the key automatically from its built-in programme, another copied the information from one key chip to another.

So I now have two extra keys for €100, and quite happy to pay that for peace of mind.
