I have done a search about fumes in the car but none seem exactly like mine. When slowing down for a junction for example a very strong fume smell comes ghrough the A/C. This does not happen at any other time. The smell is crankcase fumes, if I lift the bonnet quickly after stopping I cannot smell it, the smell from the exhaust is hardly noticeable standing behind the car with the engine running, the car has DPF. There used to be a noticeable leak from the pipe which returns crank gases just before the turbo, but when the turbo was changed recently the leak was sorted, the smell continues. The A/C intake is behind the engine just in front of the windscreen and there is a rubber seal which rests on the bonnet when closed to keep engine fumes away from the A/C and I have glued an extra strip of foam to the underside of the bonnet to maximise the seal but there is no improvement. Are there EGR issues with this motor? There are no engine fault codes sjowing on a scan. Ideas? Thanks, Michael

Are the foam blocks on the wings to continue the seal? Is there outside noise in the car, maybe a grommet loose in the bulkhead? Wife had this fault in her lr2 turned out the steering rack was done by previous owner and the boot wasn't replaced right around the base of the column she didn't notice the noise I only did when I started to question where the smell was from.

The A/C intake is a long way from the steering rack on my car and the smell is definitely crankcase fumes, too strong for just exhaust. I can see no evidence of a crankcase leak looking at the top of the engine, I would have expected clear signs of oil or carbon soot. My son suggests doing an EGR delete but I don't know how it is done and if it was what others issues might ensue.

Are you sure you're smelling crank case fumes or could it be fumes from the battery? The battery sits in the boot, and if it's being overcharged it might be releasing fumes, which then drift towards the front of the car as you slow down?

    Just a thought...

No definitely crankcase fumes and definitely coming through the A/C vents, however if after it happens and I jump out of the car quickly with the engine running and lift the bonnet I can locate no fumes as strong as those that came in the car, if you stand by the exhaust with the engine running it hardly smells at all

Few weeks ago after wife started car, I said whats that smell? she said its been doing it for a week or two now (women!) I thought bloody 3.0 tdi injectors, tuned out to be stagnant water in the screen wash bottle
I was convinced it was an engine fault.
Hers also only happened upon initial starting of the engine
Dob a little bit of bleach or something along the same lines into the bottle and see how you get on?

When the DPF self regens this can give a smell throught the cabin climate control this is supposed to be normal.

Straight away I thought injectors or cracked/blown manifold gasket, was nearly sick when i lifted washer bottle cap and took a deep sniff, cheapest fix ever!

With the DPF under the floor and the A/C intake in front of the windscreen I cannot see how the fumes would come through the A/C, surely the particulates would be burnt and go out of the exhaust. I have had the car for some years now and this problem has not been there all the time, the only issue ever with the DPF was to have yhe sensor changed.
