I had the same question as you before buying my Golf and decided to get a manual. I read many horror stories of failing mechatronic units that cost £1500 to replace, with any and all problems disowned by VW. This applies to the 7 speed dry clutch units that come on low torque engines like the 1.4 tsi 122bhp. Haven't heard or seen anything negative about the wet clutch 6 speed DSG's fitted to torquier engines like the 2.0 diesels and GTI. These seem to be a lot more reliable.

I also tried out an early 2010 1.4 122tsi with DSG and it was a dog for city driving. It left me totally powerless for 2 or 3 seconds in the middle of a junction as the traffic lights were changing as it decided what gear to take up. It was very scary indeed. It was also very jerky for slow speed manouvering, especially when moving backwards and forwards parallel parking.

Its also a service item, requiring a £150+ oil change every 40k miles as far as im aware.

The 122's awful drivability is because the mapping is obsessed with what comes out the tailpipe and ticking EU environmental boxes.
