Seems expensive to replace the cluster when a bit of rubber has failed

The damage was already done mate, the water fried the whole board. Plus sealant can be corrosive.
It was only £138 from eurowagons

    Hi Mate
I've had the same problem on my 2012 A6 for the past year, no idea where the water is getting in from
Are the foam seals not available to buy seperatly, my LED Tail lights work perfectly and do on occasions blow out the rear light when water fills up
    Really annoying and frustrating

I’m not sure about the seals (although I’m pretty sure you can’t buy them). But it was a failed seal that caused it all.
I replaced my inner left light because the water got into the light a blew the board. Once I fitted the new one it was all good.
I would recommend pulling out the drain plugs on the boot lid before replacing the light or the water may still damage the light.
I got the light from eurowagens for £135.

Very easy, just undo the 2 x 10mm bolts behind the cover in the boot lid
I removed mine yesterday to see if the foam seal was corroded or split but it was perfectly intact
Still baffled as to why it collects so much water
Where are the 2 grommets that can be removed?
There are 2 x rubber bungs on the bottom the lid, once removed it reveals a torx bolt which i was afraid of undoing, is that correct?

No. I don’t have the car anymore to show you. I think there’s two on each side. Little rubber grommets along the seam weld. There’s nothing behind them (except water).

As for the gasket seal on the light, mine looked ok until I compared it to a new one. It totally fixed the problem.
