Moving on from fitting the spare wheel to the back of the car, some scrap wood and spare time produced the Camperan.

A couple of bits of chipboard cut to shape using a cardboard template and some pallet runners gave me a base board to go where the second row of seats would be. The runners are spaced to fit where the seat mounts are.

Not pretty at this point so a piece of carpet underlay and then carpet was stapled on.

This gives a flat floor. I know I should have used grey or black carpet but so far the total outlay is £0.

Next, a bit of privacy. The window blinds are cut from a sort of compressed polystyrene that was left over from a job at work. Again cut by first making a card template to fit and then finishing to suit and covered in sticky back plastic.

Rear quarter panels are slightly over size so they push fit and stay there.

The door blinds are the same material, cut to fit just inside the window frame. Closing the door holds them in place.

Now a bit of comfort. Don't know what caravan these came from but they are about as good as it gets for fitting.

Yes they are over long but if you shut the boot and fit them from the side door they squash in nicely.

The rear window, again cut with a template and fits just inside the door rubber.

    Inside.

The result is a two berth camper that will do 60+ to the gallon, fit in a 6'6" car park, is cheap on ferries and cost a lot less than a 'T'. Yes it is cozy inside but it's nice to listen to the wind and rain knowing you haven't got to pack up a soggy tent in the morning. There is room under the floorboard for a small cooker and some supplies or wet shoes and an accessible roof height for your surfboards. We've used it for several years now at camp sites and festivals or just somewhere to break a journey.

Cushions from Fleabay £8, sticky back plastic £10. Total time input - one afternoon, not counting teabreaks.

Thanks, although I've not dared take it to a VW camper rally yet!
