These zf boxes. Do they have a sump plug for draining oil? Filter?
If they have either, or both, of them then it's a serviceable item. That's how I would speak to the dealer.
If it was sealed for life then I would expect it to be welded shut with no access.

I had mine replaced by the excellent VW Auditec in Chelmsford. They are ex VW-Audi guys who really know their stuff.

As someone above said, "sealed for life" means until it breaks...then a new (and very expensive) gearbox. Yes there is a drain plug. Enough said....!!

VERY interesting - thanks for digging that out and publishing.

You know, the fiddly bit seems to be the bit at the end - messing around with trying to get the right oil temp and have it prime the pump and so on. I suspect that is why many dealers are afraid to tackle it.

I have read the instructions over and over on how to change the oil. Seems to be do-able. Tricky part is maintaining the oil temp and then driving through the gears whilst on the ramp. If I can find anyone to do it, then ill do it myself with the help of my friends tools and his garage. Also I phoned Audi Warrington, where my car was first registered. They also say its a SFL unit.

    EDIT*****

    I found this

It is a bit messy, you would be better using a ramp rather than axle stands, I serviced the box on my 7 series a couple of years ago, Meyle do a very good kit, used diagnostics to monitor the oil temp, followed the instructions and all was well.
I will be doing this next year, car will be 4 years old and on 50K+ miles, prevention is cheaper than cure.
